Have you ever looked at some homes and wondered how the owners managed to get them to look so well put together? Do you want a home with decor that flows effortlessly from one room to the next? Then the first step to achieving that is by finding out what your personal interior style is.
Knowing your style when it comes to home decor is similar to knowing your personal style in fashion.
As an interior designer, when I carry out my design consultations, one of the first answers I seek from clients is what their style is. Knowing your style when it comes to home decor is similar to knowing your personal style in fashion. If you have no idea then you risk following each and every trend, ignoring what works for you and your home.
Finding your interior style
Finding your personal style can start with the colours or patterns you are drawn to. Not sure which colours you like the most? The first way to find out is by looking inside your closet. Fashion and interiors share some commonalities. If you arrange your clothes by colour, you will easily see which ones dominate your closet. This is a good indicator of the colours you are most likely to feel comfortable living with.
Stay true to your style
Once you know what you like, stay true to it. How do you do this? One way is by avoiding the temptation to shop from other people’s homes. What I mean by this is when you see a particular piece in another person’s home, and tell yourself you just must have it. If you find yourself doing this, stop in your tracks and ask yourself if this will really work in your home? Will it be in keeping with your overall decor style? The problem that arises when you don’t do this is you may end up with items that clash with other pieces in your home. It will leave your home looking and feeling unbalanced.
Find inspiration that compliments your style
The next step to finding your style is by familiarising yourself with the different interior styles. There are several interiors styles such as modern, minimalistic, maximalism, cottage chic, global influences just to name a few. For example, if you don’t like a cluttered feel and only want items that have a purpose in your home, then the style you are after is minimalistic.

A great tool for exploring the different interior styles is Pinterest. You can use it to see which interior looks draw your attention. I often use the boards to save my favourite looks and look back at them now and again. I also keep a personal reflective journal which I refer back to over time to see how my style has evolved. This is something you can try too.
Benefits of knowing your style
When you know your style, this helps you make well informed choices when purchasing items for your home.
Identifying your own unique style and putting a stamp of it in your home is essential to creating a wonderfully satisfying, unique and pleasant home. When you know your style, this helps you make well informed choices when purchasing items for your home. You will save money when you buy things you absolutely know you like versus those you think you want or need.
Don’t lose focus
It can be easy to lose track when trying to achieve harmony in the style of your home. There are lot of choices out there and that can be confusing. When using apps like Pinterest, Instagram and other social media platforms, you have to discipline yourself not to overindulge. Save only what you like for your home and ideas that could work.
Start creating the home you love
Knowing your interior style will help you become comfortable and confident with the choices you make when curating items for your home. I hope this helps you start your interior style journey and understand more of what you need to bring your home together.
