The skinny jeans trend has been running since 2005 when they were first introduced to the fashion market. Fast forward to now, we are seeing the trend slipping further down the popularity ladder. If skinny jeans are all you know, then perhaps it’s time to start exploring other options.

Until recently, the skinny jean trend has simply refused to go out but are we seeing a change to that resilience? The lockdown forced many to stay at home. This has seen people shifting from their usual clothing choices to more comfortable relaxed fit clothing. This trend has been noticeable in footwear as well.

While many of us own a pair of skinny jeans, some admit they find them uncomfortable to wear all day. Looking at what’s in the stores right now, we are seeing relaxed pairs like the 90’s jeans being embraced more than ever. We have all had long love affair with skinny jeans that it might take a long time for us to convert to the now popular comfy laid back cuts.
Should you invest in relaxed fit jeans?
Yes, yes and yes! Figure hugging jeans are great but wouldn’t it be nicer to feel just as great in something a little more comfortable too. Not everyone feels comfortable in skinny jeans and I know some women who avoid them altogether. Being stylish need not always come at the expense of your comfort. Where people may not want to wear joggers all the time, relaxed fit jeans are the perfect alternative.
If you are a denim lover like me and all you own are skinny jeans, here are four alternatives you may or may not have heard about that you should experiment with.
1. Bootcut jeans

Bootcut jeans have a straight leg that flares out the bottom. These are versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on your mood and the occasion. Designed to fit over boots, hence the name, you can wear these with trainers, flat or heeled sandals and of course boots if you wish.
2. Barrel Leg Jeans

Barrel leg jeans are one of my favourites. They feature a cropped wider cut leg that tapers at the ankle. I like mine cropped as I am petite and sometimes struggle finding the correct length. They are can be worn with heels or trainers. Pair with a blazer over a t-shirt and you will look stylish while still feeling comfortable.
3. Wide Leg Jeans
Wide leg jeans, whether cropped or full length, are versatile and can be worn in different ways. Go casual with cropped sweaters, t-shirts and trainers. Wear together with trainers or your favourite flat sandals. For a smart casual look you can wear these with heels and a tucked in shirt or blouse.
4. Flared Jeans

We owe our thanks to the 70’s for giving us the flare jeans. They are timeless and I especially love the high waisted cut. Flares look amazing with a blazer and t-shirt for a smart casual look. You can also opt for a chunky knit sweater with your flares for those cooler days to stay warm. For summer days, a loosely tucked in button down shirt made from light fabric will look great.

If you are hooked on skinny jeans, you don’t have to pack them away completely. However, don’t be afraid to experiment with different cuts.
Jeans are fun and versatile so enjoy trying new looks to see which ones work for you. I personally love these four alternatives and I wear them almost all the time. Jeans are my go to staple and I could easily consider them my signature look.
